2019 CESS Faculty Awards Nomination Guidelines

Each year the Dean's Office recognizes three faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in one of the following areas: teaching, research, or service. The following awards will be presented to faculty awardees at the Faculty/Staff meeting on May 15th.

Nomination Criteria:

Jackie M. Gribbons Award for Extraordinary Service (Full-time faculty, all ranks)


Jackie Gribbons founded the Higher Education and Student Affairs program at UVM and served in multiple leadership roles, including Dean of Women and Assistant to the Executive Vice President. The Jackie M. Gribbons Award recognizes the extra-ordinary service of a faculty member to their department, the college, the university and the community.


John Dewey Educator's Award for Excellence in Teaching (Full-time faculty, all ranks)


This award is in honor of one of our most important educational philosophers, John Dewey. The award recognizes a faculty member for their ability to connect theory and practice and to bring to life what it means to educate for the advancement of a civil society.


Joseph A. Abruscato Award for Excellence in Research & Scholarship (Full-time faculty conducting research)


Joseph A. Abruscato was a professor in the Department of Education and a well-known scholar in science education.  This award is given to a faculty member whose research and scholarship is exemplary and achieves the ideals of the “teacher-scholar.”



DEADLINE: April 22, 2019

To nominate a faculty member in CESS for the Jackie M. Gribbons, John Dewey, or Joseph A. Abruscato Awards, any member of the CESS community (faculty, staff, and students) must:

  • Submit a completed Faculty Recognition Award Nomination Form, including a supporting nomination narrative.
  • Secure at least one (1) additional letter of support from another CESS community member. [Those you have selected to provide letters of support will be contacted directly with further details, including a link to submit their letter.]
